Why Should I Learn To Dance? Because Of Reasons

Why Learn To Dance?

Dancing is a natural means of expression.  So, learn to dance!  It is almost impossible to listen to music and not be stirred to tap our feet, clap our hands, drum with our fingers, and sway with our bodies.   We hum, sing, whistle, or bob our head.  When we carry this innate response to its ultimate expression, we find ourselves dancing.

Learn To Dance Because We Were Born To Dance

The ability to dance is born in each of us, and the yearning to dance is as much a part of our emotional fiber as hunger, fear, and love.  All societies, from the most ancient to the modern day and across the world, share a common need for, and appreciation of dancing.

Every person is a potential dancer.  Some may dance better than others, but all can learn to dance well enough to enjoy it.  Many people feel the urge to dance, but don’t know how to express it.  Learning to dance can be a personal challenge, a new interest and creative outlet that builds self confidence through a sense of achievement.  When you learn the basic rhythms of dance, a delightful new world opens up.  So, learn to dance today!

Learn To Dance Because It’s Widely Enjoyed

Social dancing today is one of the most popular pastimes in the world.  It is enjoyed in every country, by people of all ages, genders, backgrounds, and cultures.  Good dancers are always in demand.  You always notice the good dancers in the club or at the party having fun and adding an exciting vibe to the place.  And they always seem to have plenty of partners to dance with.

Dancers have an advantage when it comes to meeting people and making new friends  They tend to have more self confidence and have an easier time fitting in socially.  Many people have been swept off their feet dancing. Use this magical skill for meeting that special someone.   So learn to dance and impress someone special.

Learn To Dance Because It’s Healthy

Dancing is a healthy activity; physically, mentally, and spiritually.  Dance can improve your balance and coordination.  Better posture can be attained through dance lessons.  You can add grace and refinement to your movement through dancing.  And that will stay with you even when you’re not on the dance floor.  Dance can be a means of self-improvement in many ways.

Learn To Dance For Your Physical Health

Dance is great exercise that can burn 250 to 450 calories per hour. It’s great for burning fat and reducing or controlling your weight.  Being up on your feet dancing helps to strengthen your bones, and moving your joints increases flexibility and, according to the American Journal of Medicine, helps to avoid or reduce arthritis.  Dance is a perfect blend of isometric and isotonic resistance and is great for building beautiful, toned muscles without building a lot of muscle mass.  Dance is a low-impact aerobic exercise that is great for cardiovascular health and recommended by the American Heart Association.

Learn To Dance For Your Mental Health

According to a study done by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, dancing is the only physical exercise found to be effective in slowing the onset of Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s.   Dancing may be a triple benefit for the brain.  Not only does the physical aspect of dancing increase blood flow to the brain, but also the social aspect of the activity leads to less stress, depression and loneliness.  Further, dancing requires memorizing steps and working with a partner, both of which provide mental challenges that are crucial for brain health.

Learn To Dance For Your Spiritual Health

Dance can be a stimulating form of relaxation that can reduce stress, overcome tension and free you from the worries of the day.  Let the music and the movement whisk you away, elevate your mood, and raise your spirits.  The cares and frustrations of the workday world seem to vanish on the dance floor.  Dance is truly a wellspring of self renewal.

The dance position used in social dancing is very similar to a hug.  Argentine tango even calls the dance hold “the embrace”.  You get the security of a hug without the need for intimacy.  Hugs are truly therapeutic and the dance community does a lot of hugging as well as dancing.

So learn to dance and improve your health today!

Learn To Dance To Benefit Your Career

This reason may not apply to everyone.  So, I will give you an example from a couple that took lessons from me early in my career.  Ralph and Dianne Chesson started taking dance lessons because they found themselves attending a large number of professional and organizational meetings and conferences.  And, the last night of every event was a dinner/dance extravaganza.  They felt awkward and out of place.  Now, after taking dance lessons, they feel right at home and have the time of their lives at these and other events.  Maybe you don’t encounter big dance events like this through your job, but dancing may be beneficial for face-to-face social networking or just feeling more comfortable and confident in any social situation.

Learn To Dance For A Special Occasion

“I need dance lessons, for an upcoming wedding,” is the most common special occasion reason that I hear.  The bride and groom will come in for lessons to learn their “first dance”.   This can be some simple basic dance steps to feel more comfortable dancing in public.  Maybe something a little fancier with more variety and a dip at the end.  Another possibility is a fully choreographed “Dancing With The Star” style routine.  “We just don’t want to look stupid in front of our family and friends” is also a common request.

In addition, the Father of the bride will often dance with his daughter on her wedding day.  Also, the groom may honor his mother with  a wedding dance as well.  Maybe, the bridesmaids and/or groomsmen will put on a show with an exciting little dance routine.  Learn to dance for your wedding.

Learn To Dance Because You Can Get Your Exercise While You Party!

In this era of online shopping, video games, apps for everything, and automobiles, most of us need to get more exercise.  Why not dance?  Dancing is the only exercise I know of that you do socially.  Such as, at a club or bar; at a wedding or party; at a company or business function; or on a date or night out with friends.  All that you need is a source of music, a few square yards of floor space, a congenial partner and a little dancing know-how!

Learn To Dance Because It’s FUN!

Perhaps the BEST REASON to learn to dance is because it’s FUN!  Most people have an incredibly good time on the dance floor.  And there is no reason in the world for not joining them.  Why not invite your friends to join you in a dance class.  Share the FUN with them . . . The more the merrier!  Come see what you have been missing.

  1. I’m glad that dancing can help improve your balance, coordination, and posture. I have been wanting to do something for a fun hobby, and dancing sounds like it would be great. I would love to help improve my posture with dancing. I will have to attend a class sometime and see if I like it!
